The New Year
05/01/2012
We would like to wish everyone a happy New Year and all best wishes for 2012. Term begins on Tuesday and a beginning of term letter will be emailed to all parents next week. Towards the end of last term parents were once again very generous with their donations to various charities. A collection held at the end of our Junior School Nativity raised £216 for the Donkey Sanctuary while the Junior and Senior School Carol Concert collections meant that we could contribute over £800 to Helen and Douglas House. The poppy collection raised over £230. Thank you very much everybody!

Colts excel at 7's

28/11/2011
On a wintery Sunday morning, the Gayhurst Colts team (U11) travelled to the picturesque setting of Rugby School to take part in the hosts’ prestigious 7’s tournament. The team played incredibly well on their way to winning all three of their pool matches, without conceding a try. The semi-final of the main competition was a tight affair against a very talented Ashfold team. A try either side of half-time ensured a comfortable route to the final against Bilton Grange.

The final was certainly ‘a game of two halves’, as Gayhurst found the opposition difficult to handle in the first 5 minutes. Finding themselves 14-0 down at half-time, the team needed to up their game, which they did and came storming back into the game. Hugo Bright touched down in the last seconds to give himself the opportunity to level the scores with a drop kick through the posts. He duly obliged and the game was drawn fourteen points each. Golden try awaited the two teams and it was cruel for either to lose. It was Bilton Grange who released their speedster in the corner to win the tournament and leave Gayhurst out on their feet.

It was a tremendous day, where the army of spectators saw terrific rugby being played. Even more impressive was the well-mannered, sporting display the Gayhurst team showed off the pitch. This added to the efforts on the field ensured that everyone returned home incredibly proud of the children and the way in which it was achieved.

Results

W 42 – 0 v Beeston Hall
W 24 – 0 v Oratory Prep
W 20 – 0 v Colet Court

Semi Final
W 14 – 7 v Ashfold

Final
D 14 – 14 v Bilton Grange
(Bilton Grange won on golden try)

Our visit to the Waterside Theatre
18/11/2011

Our visit to the Waterside Theatre by Archie Ferguson and Kian Pourkarimi

Last week year 4 were lucky enough to see a production of The Jungle Book at the Waterside Theatre Aylesbury.
The stage play was inspired by and adapted from Rudyard Kipling's famous children's book. The story begins when the baby Mowgli is lost in the jungle and is in grave danger....but not for long! Mowgli is found by a pack of wolves and they let him join their pack and together they have many exciting adventures.
The actors and costumes were very realistic. They looked like they were wearing real animal skins. There was Baloo with his padded bear costume, the wolves with their furry coats, Kaa with her scaly skin and light eyes and Sheer Khan with his wild mane.
The music was very good too and went well with the story. When Mowgli was on stage it was calm but when Sheer Khan came on it became scary!
All in all the performnace was very enjoyable and exciting. It provided a great example of the jungle for children and a classic theatre experience for adults. I thought it was amazing and recommend it to all ages!

Regional Rugby Finals
14/11/2011
The U8, U9, U10 and Colts all travelled to Warwick School on Sunday to compete in the Midlands/North Regional Rugby Finals. The teams played some terrific rugby, all progressing from their initial pools.

Agonisingly, all of the teams, with the exception of the U10's fell at the last post and missed qualification for the National Finals in March. The U10 team marched on and managed to beat Warwick Prep in the final to not only qualify for the Finals, but win the regional trophy.

Congratulations to all children involved.

WW1 Battlefield Tour Day 3
14/06/2011
An early start saw us all on the vast front of the Somme offensive line of 1st July 1916. The weather was glorious. Delville Wood, site of the South African Brigade's valiant stand is always moving but then so is the Thiepval memorial to the missing on the Somme and the Beaumont Hamel Newfoundland memorial park. The original trenches are still preserved here as they were and the Canadian guides are excellent. Everybody found the Lochnagar crater at La Boisselle, site of the mine of 1st July astonishing. Its eruption at the time could be heard in London. Rishi and Anna laid a wreath on behalf of the school at Mill Lane cemetery before we left.....shopping at Cora was very well received. Vimy Ridge tomorrow and home....a great trip...well done everyone.

WW1 Battlefield Tour Day 2
13/06/2011
The group left Ypres at 9am to see some of the more major features of the salient including the vast and beautifully kept Tyne Cot cemetery as well as Essex Farm where Donald McCrae wrote his moving poem, 'In Flanders fields. On to Arras where we were given a guided tour of the Wellington tunnels constructed almost entirely by New Zealand pioneers in 1916-17, a vast and maze-like complex underground. A cultural tour of Arras centre followed by bowling and dinner ended an action-packed day with everybody well but tired!

IAPS Golf Championships
13/06/2011
Year 8 Pupil Sam Bower competed in the annual IAPS Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Championships on Friday 10th June. The venue has hosted 10 Opens and 2 Ryder Cups, which made it a terrific setting for the day of golf. Playing in a field of 90 children, Sam scored 50 points over his 18 holes, 4 over par gross to finish in joint 2nd place overall.

Sam won the U14 title, and was honoured in the Championship room of the famous clubhouse.

WW1 Battlefield Tour Day 1
12/06/2011
The journey from Gerrards Cross to Ypres in Belgium was uneventful and we were pleased to leave the rain behind. No one was coach sick and no one was sea sick which is always a blessing! The group of Year 7 and 8 boys and girls toured the Cloth Hall Museum and St George's Chapel, built for friends and relatives of fallen soldiers. We were also privileged to be at the Menin Gate for the Last Post ceremony held at 8 o'clock every evening. Sleep is descending steadily on the Menin gate Hotel.....more tomorrow!

Skern Lodge - Update
08/06/2011
Day 3 was spent entirely at Hartland Point, a rocky bay a few miles from Skern Lodge. On arrival the boys constructed their bivi shelters before setting off for a day of adventure in and around the cliffs. All groups completed an abseil down the cliff face on to the beach and the boys had plenty of further opportunities to challenge themselves with some tight squeezes through cracks made in the rocks by the sea. The wind caused a few problems especially at lunch time! After a hard day adventuring we returned to our campsite to cook an evening meal and play American football. A stroll down to the beach to make rock towers completed a tiring day but one full of excitement and challenge. The weather was poor during the night and heavy rainfall woke everyone up bright and early. We are now back on site, full of pancakes and pastries and ready for Day 4. More tomorrow...

Skern Lodge - Update
07/06/2011
The second day brought more sunshine and all groups had the chance to get wet with a kayaking trip down the river. There was plenty of fun had by all changing places on the boats, paddling standing up and backwards paddling! Other activities during the day included the big zip wire and the assault course where groups worked co-operatively to solve a series of challenges. The evening was spent down the deep and dark tunnels! Tomorrow we head off to Heartland Point for our overnight bivi expedition. There will be a chance to abseil down a cliff face, climb in and out of the wave-cut platforms and cook their own supper. Here’s hoping for good weather. More on Thursday….

Skern Lodge Day 1
06/06/2011
The sun is shining at Skern Lodge and the boys are busy enjoying a little free time before evening activities. The journey down was uneventful and we arrived on time and ready for action. Two of the groups enjoyed some excellent surfing conditions whilst the other groups tried out climbing and abseiling. All were hungry at dinner time and enjoyed the variety of superb food on offer. All seem happy with their dorms and working groups. Tonight half of the children are wandering down to the beach on a night walk whilst the others enjoy some crazy Skern Olympics! More tomorrow....

National Science and Engineering Week
19/03/2011
We’ve been celebrating National Science and Engineering this week. The theme of the week was “Communication” and the children in Senior School have participated in events in Science lessons throughout the week. Y8 prepared an Assembly for Junior School children. They showed the various ways that humans communicate with each other, and how some animals communicate too. Y6 visited to the Natural History Museum in London where they were the first children ever to go behind the scenes in the Palaeontology Department, where they excavated fossils. They also looked around the rest of the museum and designed their own birds after visiting the bird exhibit. Y5 participated in a Sound workshop led by acoustic scientist Dr David Sharp from the Open University. They learnt about how sound waves can travel and competed to discover who has the loudest shout.

Y4 designed and built bridges using pasta and sweets. Afterwards, they were allowed to eat their constructions!

Y7 and Y8 learnt about how animals communicate with each other from Jackie who works at Whipsnade Zoo. They had the opportunity to try out animal training methods and met Snorburn, a bearded dragon.

Y2 also had a visit from Whipsnade Zoo, Hannah brought along lots of samples of animal poo (safely encased in acrylic) and the children had to work our “who pooed what”. They also met Ebeneezer, a Royal Python

National Runners-Up
07/03/2011
Our Under 9 rugby team travelled to Epsom College on Sunday to compete in the National Prep Schools Rugby Finals. The team played superbly throughout the day, progressing to beat Shrewsbury House in the semi-final. The final was a thrilling encounter against Cranmore. The tackling was ferocious but Gayhurst created a two try to nil lead at half-time. Cranmore came storming back to win in the final seconds, leaving the Gayhurst side National Runners-Up.

Chicks - Day 5
11/02/2011
What an exciting week!!! We have been very lucky to have eight of our eggs hatch, and the chicks are now happily moving around and pecking in their brooder box.

Today the children were able to stroke and hold the chicks. The children were very excited and loved how soft they were!!!

They will be going home with Mr & Mrs Whitaker for the weekend and hopefully when we see them on Monday, they will have grown even more.

Chicks
09/02/2011
Overnight three more chicks hatched and Jonah, Mrs KFC and Skye joined the brood. Early this morning our fourth girl, Phoebe, hatched, taking the total up to seven chicks.

All the chicks continue to do well and will be moving over to the brooder box in the next few hours.

Firemen visit Reception
09/02/2011
Children in Reception had some very special visitors today. Five firemen brought their fire engine along to Gayhurst for the children to explore.

HAPPY HATCHING DAY!!!
08/02/2011
Gayhurst are pleased to announce the arrival of its newest member to the brood! Fred hatched at 12:51 this afternoon. There was much excitement and he had many visitors to see him. We will be posting the video of him hatching on you-tube fairly soon.

It was a very busy day in the Science Department and we saw two more chicks hatch later this afternoon. Shelley joined the family at 2:35pm and Suki followed shortly afterwards.

All the chicks are doing well!

Eggs!
07/02/2011
The eggs have arrived!!! Today 11 fertilised eggs arrived in the Science Lab from the Living Eggs Chick Hatching Program. They are been kept in an incubator until they hatch. Hatching day should be around about Wednesday or Thursday this week, and we should start to see some pipping on the eggs tomorrow. The Year 1's, Reception and Year 3's all came to visit the eggs today and were very 'egg-cited' by the prospect of some baby chicks hatching out.
We will keep you updated with our daily photo dairy on the website and the children will be popping in at various points over the next two weeks to watch their progress.

The National Prep Schools Rugby Tournament
07/02/2011
All the school teams performed really well in windy and cold conditions. The U/13's won one match but lost the other three group matches by the narrowest of margins. The Colts, with a few players missing, were close to going through to the quarter finals but lost to a good Ridgeway team. The U/10's again played exceptionally well but unfortunately lost in the quarter final to Beacon 5-10. However, the U/9's won their group matches, to go through to the quarter finals. They beat St Pirans 20-5 and then went into the semi finals and played Lanesborough. In a very one sided match they beat them 25-5. As a result they now go through to the National finals in four weeks time. Well done all the teams and congratulations to the under nines.

Swimming Gala Triumph
04/02/2011
The year 4-6 swimming team took part in a gala against Gateway School on Thursday. The team were in fine form and the event resulted in a resounding win for Gayhurst. It’s a pleasure to see all of the training start to pay off with much more confidence in the water and really clean dives and relay change-overs. This and other events will all help to prepare the team for their next challenge which for the year 5 and 6’s will be the Bucks Schools county team selection event.

On Thursday afternoon six Year 6 boys travelled to St. Edwards School in Oxford to take part in the Oxfordshire Schools Mathematics Challenge. There were 40 teams competing in three rounds of frenetic mathematical activity. In the first round the boys had 20 challenging mental arithmetic questions to solve. This round was followed by a 'Countdown' round similar to the Channel 4 TV show where big numbers had to be created by combining smaller numbers. The final round, called the 'Big Event' saw the boys rushing up and down the hall trying to solve 20 different puzzles. After 2 hours of activities the boys and markers were thoroughly exhausted! Team 2 (Edward Lunt and Samuel Hughes-Penney) finished in 6th place, Team 1 (Oliver Zeineddine and Amarveer Pahl) finished 7th and Team 3 (Harry Shorthouse and Jivak Nischal) finished 18th. The boys thoroughly enjoyed the experience, the after match tea and the free pencils, rulers and lollies!

Real Tennis experience
18/11/2010
A team of four Gayhurst School pupils had a unique experience of playing real Tennis at Oratory Senior School. Oratory is one of only a few schools in the country to have a Real Tennis Court. However, if you get the chance visit the one at Lords Cricket ground and take a step back into history. The game is a mixture of tennis and squash and as the pupils found out you certainly have to have your wits about you. The team consisted of Arthur Hill, Felicity Gates, Oli Lomax and Charlie Spittal.

15/10/2010
On Friday afternoon pupils in Year 8 had a Maths lesson with a difference! Combining a rigorous fitness workout and a maths lesson is the new concept known as 'Mathfit.' Running round the gym forwards and backwards, press ups, squat thrusts and star jumps and then as pupils recovered walking around the gym they had to recite their tables, prime numbers, squares and cubes. After more exhausting running around the pupils were taught a lesson on H.C.F and L.C.M. and then they engaged in some head-to-head problem solving. Minds and bodies were exhausted by the end of the workout but all enjoyed what was a very successful 'pilot' session. Further details about Mathsfit, mathematically run sessions for 3 - 14 year olds, can be found at www.mathfit.co.uk or by emailing gavin@mathfit.co.uk.

Haileybury Art Honours
21/06/2010
This year the Year 5 boys have been developing work in a wide range of media based on a painting they saw in the National Art Gallery called ‘Tobias and the Angel’. As part of their work we entered a selection of their “metal drawings” into the Haileybury Festival of Art Painting and Drawing Competition, which focussed on the theme of Myths, Mysteries and Magic.

I am delighted to inform you that the following boys have been invited to attend the Award Ceremony at Haileybury Prep and Primary Schools’ Art Festival as they have been awarded certificates of merit in their respective age groups within Gayhurst School:

Giorgio Caldesi has been awarded a first place certificate of merit, and

Adam Daniel has been awarded a second place certificate of merit.

I would also like to add that the Haileybury Art Department were hugely impressed with the quality and diversity of the excellent range of works of art, and they would like me to pass on their thanks to all of the Year 5 children who have worked so hard exploring this theme. I am very proud of the effort and results that the boys have achieved in Art this year.

Somerset Tour
21/06/2010
Children in Years 7 & 8 returned to school this morning following last week's tour of Somerset. The trip was extremely enjoyable for all involved, and included some excellent cricket matches. The 1st XI drew both of their games against two very strong schools, whilst the 2nd XI battled hard to ensure a creditable draw at Millfield against a very strong opposition.

The children's behaviour and manners throughout the trip were exemplary, which ensured an excellent week was had by all.

Many thanks to Mr Kearns, Miss Legg and Mrs Selkirk for their hard work whilst away, without whom the trip would not have happened.

Somerset - Update
18/06/2010
Another fantastic day in Somerset and a visit to one of the country's largest Prep Schools. Two tough fixtures took place, and the strong Millfield sides put us under immense pressure. Both Gayhurst sides held strong and forced excellent draws. An evening of bowling and beach football is ahead for the group before the journey home via Stonehenge tomorrow.

Somerset - Update
16/06/2010
Another beautiful day in Somerset! After a morning at Dunster Castle, it was off to Hazlegrove for our first fixture of the trip. The first XI dominated and only missed out on victory by one wicket, whilst the 2nd XI just lost out in a tight encounter. Great fun is being had by all, and the children are looking forward to the challenge of Millfield tomorrow.

Somerset - Update
15/06/2010
After arriving in Minehead, the children have been to the beach, eaten dinner and visited the entertainment centre. A game of beach football awaits before the lights will go out on an enjoyable first day.

Skern Lodge - Update
10/06/2010
Day 4 began very early as we packed up camp and headed back for a big breakfast at Skern. All groups were on the water, some were surfing in the ocean whilst others were rafting down the river. After lunch all groups were on site someon the high ropes and others tackled the assault course and zip wire. Many overcame their fear of heights and took the plunge with the leap of faith. Mr Wardrop performed the 'haka' on the top beam of the cat walk! The evening meal was a roast of beef and ham followed by scones, strawberry jam and devonshire clotted cream. The final activity of the day was a night walk down to the beach. The boys will sleep well tonight in their own beds and they all look forward to coming home proud of their achievements.

Skern Lodge - Update
10/06/2010
The third day was spent at Hartland point, a short journey along the coast from Skern Lodge. The boys spent the morning abseiling down a cliff face and after lunch a coastal walk investigating caves and 'squeezes.' After our day on the beach we headed back to the camp site which the boys constructed their own shelters and then cooked a tasty meal of hot dogs and pasta. After doughnuts it was back to the beach for a campfire and a time for reflection. The boys highlighted their achievements and their goals for the remaining activities. A rainy and windy night was spent in the shelters but they all remainded standing in the morning when at 6 o'clock we got up ready for our return to Skern.

This morning (Day 4) some groups are surfing whilst the others are rafting. High ropes, assault course and zip wire to come this afternoon.

Skern Lodge - Update
08/06/2010
After a good journey down the boys of Year 6 arrived safely at Skern, ready for action. A light rain was falling as two groups ventured off to the river for some kayaking whilst the others took on the challenge of the climbing wall and abseiling. The water was warm, and it was just as well, as all the boys and staff took seemed to spend most of the time in it! Jack Binnington hijacked an instructors canoe and Morgan Davies and Zach Emmel seemed to spend most of their time going around in circles! The diving competition off the side of the river bank provided a wonderful opportunity foir the boys to try out their back flips and belly flops. Those on the climbing wall had the chance to take on some difficult climbing as well as practising the abseil in preparation for Hartland. In the evening, following an excellent dinner, the boys enjoyed a variety of activies in the 'Skern Olympics.'

Success on the Race Track!
30/04/2010
Two teams from Gayhurst took part in the Bucks Finals of the Maths - Cars in Motion Competition. The boys had already won their heats at school and qualified for the finals which took place at Turnfurlong School in Aylesbury. The boys had an hour and a hour to plan their race strategy over the testing Malaysian Grand Prix circuit. With weather constantly changing the boys had to plan pit stops for tyre changes and refueling. The race finally got under way when all teams had completed their preparations and the Gayhurst Year 6 team of Jay Patel, Matthew Dallow, Christopher Daniell and James Gould saw their car get off to a flying start moving up two places on the grid in the early laps. However, places were exchanged throughout the race and the boys saw their car finish the race in a very respectable third position. The Year 7/8 team of Conor Dowds and Harry Criss did even better and their car won the Key Stage 3 competition. The boys raised the trophy and now go on to represent Bucks in the semi-finals of the National Competition. Look out Jenson Button!

Two boys qualified for the Primary Mathematics Challenge Final this year. Over 200 000 pupils took the initial test in the Autumn term of last year and Nicholas Bellars and Sam Long achieved a qualifying score in the top 5% of the country. Although Sam just missed out on a medal place Nicholas achieved a score of 21/25 securing a Bronze medal. Congratulations to both boys for making it to the final.

Fun Run Success
15/03/2010
The weather was very kind to us on the day and it was a fantastic turn out for our first Fun Run, in aid of our link school in Ethiopia.

We were extremely fortunate to have Denise Lewis opening the proceedings as well as starting the races and presenting the prizes, which made it even more special for the winners, especially the dads!

After a good warm up on the astro, taken superbly by Sarah Westbrook-Burr, the mums got the event away. Ali Kingston and Jo Buzz were neck and neck for most of the three mile race but Ali broke away to take first place in a time of 22.55, Jo Buzz second 23.11 and Joanna Edwards was third 23.42. Andrea Walter won the best dressed in her Afro wig.

Kids race 1 for Years 3, 4 and 5, was contested over one mile and as soon as they were off the Junior Dash started. With one lap around the bottom field, the first home for the girls was Emily Booth second was Emily Harris and third was Savanna O’Regan. Oliver Walter was first for the boys, second was Aaron Phillips and third was Lawrence Gibbs. Jane Emmins won best dressed in her dalmation outfit.

Not long after the finish the first to cross the line in Kids race 1, was Charlie Spittal in a time of 6.13, second was Henry Wise and third was Wesley Adamo. First for the girls was Sophie Hunn, second was Imogen Bond and third was Amrit Lalli. Best dressed was Josh Davis as Bart Simpson.

The next race was Kids race 2 for years 6,7and 8 and to keep it in the family James Kingston was first in a time of 9.57 for the two miles, second was Joshua Ferguson 10.02 and third was Joshua King 11.02. First for the girls was Sophie Emmins, second was Jessica Lawley and third was Holly Saunder. Best dressed was Roshini Nischal.

The final race of the day was the dads race and it was very much a one horse race with Dean Ricketts, with his cycling background, coming first in 18.26 for the three miles, second was Terry O’regan 19.14 and third was Alastair Weinel 20.24. Best dressed with babe in arms was Andrew Ferguson.

The final amount isn’t confirmed yet but the Fun Run should have raised approximately £4000. A fantastic amount, which will make such a huge difference to Jenda school. From the feedback we have had everyone had a great time and we look forward to it becoming an annual event. A big thank you to all the people who ran, supported family members or were involved in organising the event. It was very much a team effort but a special thank you must go to Joanna Green for her enthusiasm and effort in co-ordinating such an event.

World Maths Day
05/03/2010
48 hours of intense mathematical activity finally came to a close on the evening of March 4th. 235 countries had taken part in a record breaking attempt to beat the highest number of correctly answered questions in a series of head-to-head competitions between pupils from around the world. Over a million pupils were participating with over 80,000 online at any one time. The world record was smashed with 479,732,612 questions answered correctly. Pupils at Gayhurst contributed 34,464 correct answers. Special mention should be made of Cameron Conn who recorded the most correct answers in the school with 2,602 and Cameron also achieved the highest score of 51 correct answers in 60 seconds! William Stars 2,317 and Jamie Kumar 2,151 were the 2nd and 3rd highest points scorers. Congratulations to Bertie Simpson who achieved a 209% improvement during the competition.

UK Maths Trust Regional Finals
04/03/2010
Four boys from Gayhurst travelled to Furze Platt School in Maidenhead to compete in the regional finals of the UK Maths Trust Team Challenge. The competition was over four rounds and the Gayhurst team of Cameron Conn, Scott Gates, Daniel Mackinnon and Matthew Maynard worked very hard answering some fiendish mathematical questions. There was a relay round, a head-to-head round, a crossnumber and group questions all of which proved very challenging. However, at the end of the competition, the Gayhurst team finished 7th out of 27 teams. A fine effort considering the competition was open to pupils in Year 8 and 9.

The Art Department's "Clay Day" for Years 7 and 8!
05/02/2010
On Tuesday 2nd February the Years 7 and 8 children were very fortunate to spend the day working with a visiting sculpture expert, Richard Gibson (www.ArtByRich.co.uk), who has over 15 years of experience as a practising artist, ceramicist and sculptor. All of the children produced some wonderful pieces of clay sculpture with him, which related to their studies on the findings of the famous mathematician Fibonacci and the relationships between patterns, lines and shapes found in nature and architecture. It was a very successful and enjoyable day and we look forward to working with Mr Gibson again in the future. Please contact Mrs Miller (Head of Art) for further information about this event.

Gayhurst Maths Challenge
01/02/2010
On Friday afternoon 10 teams took part in the annual Year 6 Mathematics Challenge. Teams from 8 local schools competed in a head-to-head relay race of mathematical questioning. After only 10 minutes of the competition Gerrards Cross School were half way through the 40 questions that had been set! Butlers Court were not far behind and Gayhurst 'A' were well off the pace. However, when Gerrasrd Cross finished question 40 they had passed on 8 questions and Butkers Court, although second to finish, had passed on 2 themselves. Only Gayhurst 'A' could catch either team and with a few minutes to spare the team of Jay Patel, Amandeep Patel, Sam Long and Matthew Dallow cruised through finishing all 40 questions and won the competition. Well done Team 'A'. Gayhurst have now won this competition two years running. Congratulaitons to Team 'B', Nathan Leach, Nicholas Bellars, Spencer Pearson and William Da Silva who finished in a very respectable 5th place.

The Gayhurst Fun Run for Ethiopia is fast approaching. Please see the PA News page of the website for more information.

Weather Update: Thursday 14th January
13/01/2010
The extreme weather conditions continue to infuriate us. Early morning snowfalls in particular provide exceptionally hazardous and obstructive conditions which is why we were forced to close today.
Tomorrow’s forecast is for severe ice on the roads during the early part of the day. However the school anticipates opening as normal. FOR TOMORROW and as a general rule the following guidelines should be useful for parents: Please consult the website for any variations in the day’s schedule.
We will do our utmost to provide up-to-date information and this may include a later start to the normal day. If you are in ANY doubt about making your journey or whether the school will be open wait for definitive information on the website.
Telephoning the school will also help but in adverse circumstances we cannot guarantee that someone will be there early in the school day. We will endeavour to use the GPA snowcharts when possible as well but any forced, late changes will be difficult to pass on in this way. The safety of the children, yourselves and the staff is of paramount importance.
Thank you for your cooperation and patience.

8.30pm Wednesday 13th January

1st XV @ Rugby School
19/10/2009
On Saturday 17th October the 1st XV played a curtain raiser against St Anselm’s from Derbyshire, before Rugby 1st XV played Haileybury. We were very privileged to be able to play on ‘The Close’, where William Web Ellis first picked up the ball and ran with it. The pitch is bigger than Twickenham and it certainly took its’ toll on some of the players. As for the game, we were outplayed in the backs by St Anselms, although Scott Gates won the man of the match for Gayhurst at outside half. Despite losing heavily, it was a unique experience for all the team.

RAF Halton X-Country

Junior Road Safety Officers
16/10/2009
Four boys from Gayhurst travelled to the Curzon Centre in Beaconsfield to take part in a training programme to become Junior Road Safety Officers. They had training in how to deal with child safety in and around our school and suggested ways in which the school might deal with congestion. The boys will now look at introducing new initiatives at school and provide monthly bulletins on issues relating to road safety. Congratulations to Joseph Lucas, Joshua Wanblad, Alastair Little and Lando Iacobucci for successfully completing the course.

Colts 6's @ Bradfield
11/10/2009
A fantastic team effort saw the Colts football team come within a whisker of winning the Bradfield College Prep Schools tournament. Just managing to qualify for the Quarterfinals from the group stage, Gayhurst beat Twyford comfortably 2-0 and progressed to play Shrewsbury House in the Semi-finals. A tight game ensued, Dylan Moss scoring a fantastic goal to put Gayhurst one up. Tired legs soon began to show and Shrewsbury got themselves back into the game. The game seemed destined for penalties, and in the end, James Gould saved a Shrewsbury kick, and Gayhurst made the final. The final started quietly, and a sloppy goal took Crosfields one up in the first half. A terrific run from Captain William Da Silva saw Gayhurst pull level through Dylan Moss again and much like the Semi-Final, the game went to penalties. Again, James Gould was outstanding, as he had been all day, but it was Crosfields turn to win a shoot-out and Gayhurst were left unlucky Runners-Up. It was a memorable day, for a team who were short of practice and showed tremendous fighting spirit and ability to produce such a performance.

The Percy Watts Shield

Gayhurst hosted their annual U8 Tag Tournament on Saturday. The standard of rugby was the highest seen for some time, and lots of try's were scored. The eventual winners of The Percy Watts Shield were Davenies, beating The Beacon in the final.

Gayhurst reached the semi-final stage, only to lose out to a 'Golden Try' against The Beacon.

Gardening Club Success
30/09/2009
The environment club at Gayhurst school got the chance to sample the fruits of their hard labour last night. The corn that was planted last term was ready to be eaten and the boys enjoyed the opportunity to pick the cobs and cook them up on the spot. We all agreed that nothing tastes as good as eating something fresh that you have grown yourself!

Colts Tournament Success

English Schools Ski Qualifying Races
23/09/2009
Gayhurst School fielded Under 14 and Under 12 Teams in these qualifying races held at The Southampton Ski Centre last Saturday and both teams skied very well considering they have been training on snow at Hemel and had to return to plastic for these races. Racing in a field of 120 Harry Sutherland skied brilliantly to win the Under 14 category and come 15th Overall. He was well supported by George Hetherington who scored two `personal bests` , Zachary Emmel completed both runs and Spencer Pearson had a good second run. The team finished in 3rd place and are hoping to be selected for the National Championships in Rossendale in October. The Under 12 Team who were all only 8 years old completed a good first run with Richard Dean, Thomas Worsfold and Josh Barton all finishing in good times and were lying in 3rd place. However in the second run Josh Barton crashed on the last gate and Thomas Walter also failed to finish so there was no team score but these boys have two more years in this category. Ben Crossley-Smith acted as `forerunner` and did a great job in his first ski on plastic. The team was well supported by parents and everyone enjoyed the very high standard of racing. Harry Sutherland has been selected to represent Great Britain in the Czech National and International Championships to be held in the Czech Republic in January and we wish him the best of luck in these races.

Chamber Choir Concert
22/06/2009
Following all the fun of the carnival in Chesham on Saturday 13th June, the air rang with 'Midsummer Melodies' floating from Chesham Park Community College. The newly formed Chrysalis Community Choir gave their second performance of varied music to a packed hall of over 300 people. The main role of the evening, apart from allowing the choir to shine, was to raise money for two worthy causes: Birchwood House - supported by Scope and the Macmillan Cancer Trust. In a supporting role were the boys from the Chamber Choir of Gayhurst School, Gerrards Cross, who transported the audience back to Dickensian England with a selection of songs from 'Oliver', and charmed them with their rendition of Panis Angelicus and then a change of language as they sang a trio of Spanish songs. A quartet of the youngest boys sang a lovely song from the Tigger Movie - 'Your Heart will Lead Me On'. The two choirs came together to give a very moving performance of 'You Raise Me Up'. The choirs were accompanied by the Chrysalis Band who performed their 'Millenium Medley' - a 7 minute selection of music from the last 1000 years, as well as a pair of songs from the shows, Jesus Christ Superstar and Phantom of the Opera. Overall the evening raised well in excess of £2000. Congratulations to all who were involved in a very successful evening.

Junior Mathematical Challenge
11/06/2009
The UK Junior Mathematical Challenge, set by Leeds University, proved once again to be a mixture of challenging and enjoyable questions. Year 7 and 8 pupils recorded the best results ever with 6 pupils achieving the gold standard, 4 silver and 2 bronze. The most notable success was by Daniel Mackinnon who as well as achieving the gold standard also became the first Gayhurst pupil to qualify for the Junior Mathematical Olympiad. Of the 18 pupils who took the Challenge 12 achieved an award.

GOLD - Ben Sutherland, Toby Brazier, Jamie Askew, Daniel Mackinnon, Cameron Conn and Scott Gates
SILVER - William Bowen, Robert Sutherland, Elliot Van Bathold and Ben Krebs
BRONZE - Max Baldry and James Kirby

Century for 1st XI Captain
04/06/2009
William Bowen (1st XI captain) scored a memorable hundred against a strong Northwood Prep side on Wednesday and becomes the latest player to receive The Lord’s Taverners Centurion Award. William joined Scott Gates (75 not out) at the crease with the score 40-2, and together the two batsman shared a tremendous unbroken partnership of 166. William had reached 100 not out in 70 balls and 66 minutes. William is only the 4th player to achieve such a feat in 16 years at the school, the innings was promptly declared. Northwood were then bowled out for 62, William Martin, Robert Sutherland and Scott Gates taking three wickets apiece and the game was won by 144 runs.

Year 6 at Skern Lodge - Day 3
04/06/2009
With the sun still shining the boys packed up for the overnight expedition to Hartland. On our arrival we were divided up into groups and as some set off for the coastal walk others decended the cliffs by abseil. As the tide came in and the waves swept up the beach this activity became more interesting by the minute! Other groups walked along the beach and were set challenges on the way. Small wave cut holes were crawled through and the boys found out why they were called 'squeezes.' A climbing challenge around a rock pool proved very difficult and many dropped into the pool before they had got very far. Maybe it was an excuse to get cool as the sun beated down. After all groups has completed all the activities we set off back to camp. Bivi's were made and then supper was cooked. Hot dogs and pasta were never more popular and after a game of tag american football the boys devoured doughnuts and biscuits for dessert. Then as the sun began to set we all walked down to the beach for a camp fire and roasted mashmellows. Into bed quite late and up again at 5.30 a.m. to be ready for the return journey to Skern. The weather has changed today with overcast skies and a still breeze. The surfers will be grateful. More tomorrow.

Year 6 at Skern Lodge - Day 2
02/06/2009
After a good sleep and fuelled up with a full english breakfast the boys set about their activities for day 2. Groups 1,2,5 and 6 enjoyed some excitement on the big zip wire and then used their initiatives on the team assult course challenge. Groups 3 and 4 had the treat of the high ropes! Most boys braved the 'leap of faith' and used their balancing skills on the monkey ropes and inclined pole. After a tasty packed lunch all the boys were out on the water, paddling down the Torridge estuary on rafts and kayaks. With the sun beating down the boys and staff seemed to spent more time in the water than on their respective boats! The weather continues to be outstanding and the boys are taking on fluids and covering themselves in sun cream at every opportunity. Chicken curry was on the menu for supper and then the evening was spent either doing team games or taking a night walk down to the beach.

Year 6 at Skern Lodge - Day 1
01/06/2009
The Skern party arrived safely ahead of schedule and arrived to clear blue skies and glorious sunshine. Groups 1 - 4 were quickly on the climbing tower practising their climbing and abseiling skills for the Hartland day whilst Groups 5 and 6 hit the surf and had a wonderful time in the Atlantic sea trying to stand up on a surf board! Everyone enjoyed their first activities before tucking into some fine food. The table tennis tables are getting good use and in the evening the boys competed in the Skern Olympics.

Young Business Day
23/03/2009
Boys in Year 7 and 8 had their first taste of the business world when Tim Hall from the Young Biz company came to Gayhurst and gave the boys an interesting and entertaining presentation. The boys had to design their own business card and then the real fun started as they were given a bag of sweets to trade. Some formed partnerships whilst others traded on their own. Different sweets had different values and trading was frantic as pink straws were exchanged for chewits! After the chaos of the trading game thew boys then had to decide on a product to sell. They had to prepare and present a short talk on their product illustrated with posters and any visual aids they could get their hands on. The boys all really enjoyed the sessions which gave them an insight in the true business world.

Primary Mathematics Challenge Final
16/03/2009
Four boys in Year 6 qualified for the Primary Mathematics Challenge Final this term. With only the top 5% going through Gayhurst were very proud to have four boys make the finals. Scores over 20 out of a possible 25 achieved a medal and congratulations go to James Kingston who scored 20 and achieved a Bronze medal and to Matthew Maynard who scored 23 and achieved Silver medal standard. Matthew was one mark off a Gold which he achieved last year whilst still in Year 5! Congratulations also to Ayan Batra and James Crean who made the final but narrowly missed out on getting a medal.

U10's @ Northwood
15/03/2009
The Under 10 team travelled to Northwood Prep's 6-a-side tournament on Sunday morning. A slow start against Haberdasher's school resulted in a goaless draw, this was then followed by two emphatic four goal victories against Belmont and Northwood Prep 'B'. This was enough to qualify for the shield final against UCS. The final was an extremely tight game and ended goaless at the end of normal time. Five minutes of golden goal extra-time was played, and with a minute left on the clock, Gayhurst conceded their first goal of the day and unfortunately were beaten.

It was a tremendous effort by all, and on another day the luck may have swung the other way What was most pleasing to see was the way in which the Gayhurst team took defeat, instantly congratulating UCS on their victory. Well done to all involved, and many thanks to the army of supporting families.

U8's Triumph
14/03/2009
The Under 8 A team continued Gayhurst's run of form in local tournaments by winning the St Piran's 6-a-side tournament on Saturday. Playing some excellent football all morning, the team won three group games (against Beacon, Dolphin & St Piran's B) and drew one (against St Piran's A). This was good enough to qualify for the final against The Beacon. The final was extremely tight and Beacon managed to equalise in the last minute and make it 2-2. Five goaless extra-time minutes were played, so it was to be penalties. Jamie Gibbs saved two and became the hero in goal. Congratulations to all that took part, it was a fantastic team effort.

11/03/2009
On Tuesday the boys were all involved in a charity event. An ex-professional footballer with his giant inflatable goal set up a shooting speed challenge. The boys had three attempts to record their fastest with their time being recorded on an screen at the back of the goal. Dylan Moss set the early pace with a shot recorded at 50 mph. Mr. Ashley-Jones was not to be outdone and recorded an impressive 51 mph! The older boys then had their attempts and both Ben Lane and Alex Bridges matched Dylan’s earlier attempt. With the day nearly over Elliot van Barthold and Max Baldry recorded speeds of 51 mph – the fastest of the day. Their was a fierce staff competition too with Mr Kearns recording an impressive 56 mph. before Mr Bushnell smashed in a shot at 68 mph. Congratulations also to Mrs Laudron who recorded 36 mph. taking the best female title. It was an exciting event and we hope the monies raised by the boys will bring some relief to the children of Africa who have so little.

U9 Tournament Success
08/03/2009
Gayhurst's Under 9 side won their home tournament for the first time ever on Saturday. Seven other schools attended the tournament, and some excellent football was played. Pupils from Years 2 - 8 were able to complete against children from all over the world in a quick-fire test of their mental mathematical ability. A new world record was set and Gayhurst pupils were part of that achievement. The boys had to work hard but had fun too. Overall, it was an excellent experience and the school look foward to competing again next year.

Year 8 in the Nursery
04/03/2009
Ben Sutherland was the latest Year 8 boy to spend a morning in the Nursery. The older pupils have been spending part of a morning each working with the youngest Gayhurst children throughout this term. It has been a project completed as part of their ICT curriculum, passing on some of their own knowledge and learning some basic teaching skills. The Nursery children have been working with shapes and lines, concentrating on mouse control.

Four Year 8 boys travelled to Furze Platt school on Tuesday 3rd March to represent Gayhurst in the UKMT Regional Mathematics Challenge Final. Competing against 27 other schools from around the region including many schools made up of Year 9 pupils, the boys completed four gruelling rounds of mathematical questioning. The first round saw all four boys answering 10 tricky puzzles which was followed by a Head-to-Head round where the teams competed to finish six rounds of questions before their opponents. After lunch the boys had to complete a cross number and then to finish a fast and furious relay race! The boys did not win the event but they competed very well and tried their hardest in every section. Their marker was full of admiration! Well done boys - a hard day but very rewarding.

National Cross Country Championships
02/03/2009
U11 Boys

James Kingston fell right at the start of the race in what was a mass scramble for the front. A field of over 170 boys headed off up the hill and aroundthe gruelling 2.6 km course. Kingston recovered from his early setback and finished 24th with Connor Worrell close behind in 33rd. Harry Sutherland, 86th and Jonathan O'Regan, 94 made up the rest of the team. All the boys did well to finish in the top 100.

U13 Boys

The senior boys had a much tougher course over 3.2 km. The Sutherlands got off to a cracking start and Rob was pushing for 3rd at one stage. James Kirby and Christopher Neophytou were also trying their hardest particularly on the hills. With over 150 runners in this race the leading pack soon broke away and Robert Sutherland, 7th and Ben Sutherland, 13th should be delighted with their finishing positions. James Kirby just missed out on a top 100 finish and Christopher Neophytou unfortunately had to retire through injury.

National Rugby Finals
01/03/2009
Both our Year 4 & 5 teams travelled to Epsom College on Sunday to take part in the National Prep Schools Rugby tournament. On Saturday, the whole tour party boarded the boat to Venice. A stroke of luck meant that it was carnival weekend, so on top of the usual sights, all were treated to views of masked locals, dressed up and enjoying themselves. The trip started with a visit to a glass factory, where everyone was shown how some of the glassware was made. Once in Venice itself, the boys bought gifts and souvenirs, on what was a beautiful sunny day. Saturday night was Jamie Hinch’s birthday party, where everyone tucked into pizza and pasta.

Today, once checked out of the hotel, everyone will play in a football tournament at the local pitch. Lunch is scheduled for around 2pm, and then one last visit to the beach and following that, the party will start the journey home. The expected time of arrival at Gayhurst is Midnight, and once on the coach from Gatwick, the website will be updated to confirm this.

Last night saw our first set of matches against a club side called Vicenza. The matches were tough and saw some excellent rugby played by all sides. The Year 6 teams came up against some very big and quick players and could do little to stop their onslaught. The Year 5 boys played two entertaining matches, winning both quite comfortably.

The hospitality at Vicenza was fantastic, the setting beneath the mountains beautiful and all boys came through the game with no injuries; a great start to the tour!

We woke up this morning to beautiful blue skies, and were treated to a fantastic buffet breakfast. This followed on from a three course dinner last evening, consisting of pasta, pork and chips, and a desert! Mr Whitaker’s quiz took place after dinner and went down a storm, ‘The Ducks’ ran out winners by 3 points. Everyone is happy and enjoying themselves. All boys slept well, with some proving rather hard to dislodge from their beds this morning!

Today we have had a training session on the beach, playing touch rugby and all of the tour party are looking forward to this afternoon’s game. We head off on the coach after lunch and will return late this evening after sampling the local side’s hospitality. Scores will be posted on the website either this evening or first thing tomorrow morning.

Welcome to the redesigned Gayhurst School website. We hope that you find it easier to navigate and keep in touch with events that are taking place as well as read the latest news. For current parents there will also be reminders about all sorts of sundry items so that it will be a daily point of contact.

Could we remind parents that children who play in teams against other schools are expected to stay on for match tea afterwards as a matter of politeness. Also on the games’ front, if a pupil has to wear glasses to play contact sports these should be safety glasses.

Battlefield Trip 2009: If parents of boys in Years 7 and 8 would like their son(s) to go on the battlefields visit next June would they please return the relevant consent form to the office together with the initial deposit.
