Future Schools

Gayhurst has had a tradition of sending children on to a very wide range of secondary schools. Each child is an individual and it is important therefore to try and select an appropriate school which will most benefit that particular individual. At all times the Headmaster and Senior staff would be available for advice in, what is for many parents, a difficult and very important choice.

Grammar School

Buckinghamshire is one of the few areas of the country which still operates a selective system for transfer into the maintained sector secondary schools. This is achieved through a series of I.Q. tests based on verbal reasoning skills and set by NFER. These are now taken in the academic year when the child is eleven years old. Generally the child needs to achieve an aggregate standardised score of 121 to transfer to the maintained sector grammar schools although scores of between 117 and 121 are usually sufficient to be offered a place at a grammar school after a review or an appeal. The national average score is 100 and the range can be from 75 to 141.

The choice of grammar school is dependent upon catchment areas which are based upon Parish boundaries although it is possible through the appeals system to transfer out of area. There is no difference in the qualifying score for any of the grammar schools. If a child does not achieve the qualifying score, he or she is allocated a place at a secondary school.

The grammar schools that Gayhurst feeds on a regular basis are the Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe, Dr Challoner's at Amersham, John Hampden Grammar School and Chesham. The nearest secondary schools are Chalfont Community College, Beaconsfield High and Amersham School. There are opportunities for children to transfer at the ages of twelve and thirteen although these are more limited. The number of boys transferring to the Buckinghamshire grammar schools in the last five years is as follows: 2005 - 26/31, 2006 - 22/28, 2007 - 20/26, 2008 - 25/29, 2009 - 23/28, 2010 - 18/24. These figures do not reflect the number of children who actually took up the places as many parents wish to keep all their options open for as long as possible even though they are pursuing the Independent secondary sector for their children.
